DESCRIPTION

IoTbase RPi

Carrier board for Raspberry Pi (40-pin, HAT-compatible) · IoTextra mezzanine · mikroBUS™

Power: 9–36 VDC or USB · RS485 · Qwiic · GPIO and I²C · Open Hardware

Part of the IoTbase series · compatible with IoTextra mezzanine modules · Make Things Happy!

The IoTbase RPi carrier module is specifically designed to seamlessly integrate Raspberry Pi (40-pin GPIO models), mezzanine modules and mikroBUS™ modules. This Open Source Design is ideal for Industrial Automation and Smart Home projects.

The IoTbase RPi is a core component of our modular ecosystem (learn more on our Philosophy page). Engineered for seamless compatibility with the IoTextra series, this module features deep native integration with the IoTflow platform.

The module can be used as a standard HAT for Raspberry Pi thanks to its 40-pin connector, and can be powered directly from the Raspberry Pi itself (jumper SB20) or independently through its own PWR/USB input — making it equally suited to standalone deployment or stacking with other Raspberry Pi accessories.

Additionally, it can accommodate a 47x56mm IoTextra series mezzanine module using a 12-pin HOST connector. This connector carries I²C signals and eight GPIO signals (AP0-AP7), generated directly by the Raspberry Pi.

The IoTbase RPi module includes an M1 connector with mikroBUS™ contacts, compatible with Click® modules and other mikroBUS™-based System-on-Modules.

To use the I²C interface, the module is equipped with two Qwiic© connectors for seamless communication with other modules through the I²C bus. These connectors support the integration of external devices and sensors, with the option to enable pull-up resistors for I²C as needed.

The IoTbase RPi module offers optional support for the RS-485 protocol, based on the SP3485EN-L/TR half-duplex transceiver. Direction control can be switched between two modes using onboard jumpers (JEN/JDI): fully automatic (hardware-based, no software required) or software-controlled via the Raspberry Pi's GPIO4. A 120Ω termination resistor can be enabled with a jumper for bus-end installations.

The module includes two FFC connectors:

  • 40-pin — for inter-module connections (RPI40), for example with other IoTbase modules
  • 12-pin — for repeating HOST connector signals (HOST-PF)

The module has a hardware watchdog (TPS3828-33DBV), which can also be used to trigger an external hardware reset of the Raspberry Pi via the AUX connector and the board's RUN pins.

To enhance configurability and user data storage, the IoTbase RPi module incorporates an EEPROM with a capacity of either 8 Kbit or 64 Kbit (M24C08/M24C64 or compatible). The default I²C address is 1010111x, and users can modify this address using jumpers on the bottom side of the module.

The input power for the IoTbase RPi module is non-isolated, ranging from 9VDC to 36VDC. This power can be supplied via a 2-pin 3.5mm pitch terminal block connector, or via the USB Type-C connector. The input voltage is converted to 5VDC by a DC-DC converter, with the maximum current depending on the type of converter installed (1A, 2A, or 3A, corresponding to 5W, 10W, or 15W).

Given its dimensions of 65 x 56 mm, the module aligns with the popular Raspberry Pi A board format, facilitating seamless integration with Raspberry Pi projects and enclosures.

The IoTbase RPi module finds application in various industries, including but not limited to:

  • Industry and Transport
  • Environmental Monitoring
  • Field Devices and PLC Communication
  • Smart Home
  • Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • Power On/Off Switching
